El Nispero Zoo and Botanical Garden

El Níspero Zoo is in a beautiful setting, surrounded by nature. This zoo is worth visiting for its magnificent scenery alone. A paved road leads from downtown El Valle to the zoo entrance, where parking is available. Admission to the zoo costs $5.00 for foreigners and $2.00 for residents.

In your walk around the zoo you will find many different animals native to Panama and Latin America. From birds to tapirs and monkeys to horses, Níspero offers a wide variety of interesting animals for you to see up close.

The most popular attraction of this zoo is the currently endangered golden frog. The golden frog is native to Panama, specifically to the El Valle region. The golden frogs are inside a large tank in the center of an exhibition hall that houses many different types of frogs and toads. The tiny golden frog is difficult to detect at first, so be patient when looking for it.

Although the cages are small, the zookeepers take good care of the captive animals. Many of the animals have been rescued. You can purchase food at the entrance to feed the animals.

There are also many walking trails around the zoo where you can try to spot the freely-roaming animals.

The open lawns in the zoo are ideal picnic spots if you bring a lunch, and sweets and snacks are also available for purchase.

It is advisable to bring an umbrella or rainjacket if you visit during the rainy season from April to December.

The zoo also has a botanical garden where you can purchase ornamental plants and fruit trees.
