Sporting Events

Panama stands out as the stage for international sporting events. In recent years it has hosted a series of events, including the Central American Games in 2010.

  • We have repeatedly hosted the World Surfing Championship. Since 2010, the World Masters Championship has been held at Santa Catalina Beach. In 2012, the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship was held at Venao Beach. Three hundred of the best youth surfers from 35 countries met in Panama for the 10th version of what has become the most important indicator of the elite surfers of the future. Panama has consistent waves throughout the year, both on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Its warm tropical climate and friendly people make it a perfect destination for a competition at this scale, which featured the world's best Under 18 Boys, Under 16 Boys and Under 18 Girls.
  • For the first time ever, the IRONMAN World Championship 70.3 was organized in Panama, bringing together over 600 athletes of 35 nationalities to compete alongside an outstanding number of 290 Panamanians. These triathlon competitors raced to win a prize purse that totaled $75,000, divided among the top 8 men and women to cross the finish line. The event was also attended by the seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong from the U.S. It is called 70.3 for the total number of miles the athletes must complete.
  • The first Challenger Tour ATP Visit Panama was organized, a professional competition at the level of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Tennis players like the American Michael Russell, the Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva, the Canadian Peter Polanski and the Panamanians Walner Espinosa and Gilberto Gómez participated in this event.
  • For the ninth consecutive year, the closing event of the Panama Claro Championship 2012 took place. The international golf tournament brought together over 100 professional golfers from 15 countries, including Mexico, the United States and Panama. The winner of this year's tournament was the American Edward Loar.

Boxing has always been a sport that attracts Panamanians and holds a special place among athletic events. The hard work of athletes, coaches, promoters, private enterprise and government has allowed them to reap successes, bringing Panama to be recognized as a world boxing leader per capita, with 19 world champions in its boxing history. Promotions and Events of the Isthmus is a company that has produced interesting boxing cards in Panama, and titles like WBA Super Featherweight, Cruiserweight and Bantamweight have been disputed.

These and other sporting events can be enjoyed seasonally in Panama.
