Gulf of Montijo

It is predominantly tropical rainforest, but there are also grasslands, savannas, swamps and secondary vegetation. Mangrove forest predominates in the Gulf, with different representative species such as the red mangrove, black mangrove and white mangrove. The Gulf of Montijo Wetland of International Importance represents an important stop-over and nesting habitat for migratory birds. Among the birds that can be found, stand-outs include the Belted Kingfisher, raptors like the osprey and the hawk swamp, and exotic birds like the red-lored Amazon parrot.

Location:

Located in the southern part of the Veraguas province, in the districts of Montijo, Soná, Río de Jesús, Mariato and Santiago. It covers a total area of 89,452 hectares between terrestrial and marine areas.

How to arrive?

Car: Driving from Panama, take the Panamerican Highway towards the central provinces. Upon reaching the city of Santiago, province of Veraguas, in front of Hotel Piramidal, take Central Avenue or Hector A. Santacoloma towards the St. James Cathedral. Then turn left on 2nd Street, which runs right behind the church (the same one that goes to the town of La Colorada). Once on 2nd Street, take the second fork to the right, which will bring you to Montijo.
