A few days ago a soccer match for the World Cup play-offs was held between the teams of Panama and Honduras. Some 28,000 people watched at the Romel Fernandez stadium, a record level of attendance. About 700 Hondurans traveled to watch the game, and we assisted around 180 of them. From the moment they touched Panamanian soil, all they did was purchase tours. This shows that not only did they come informed, but they knew just what they wanted to do.

Our country could become a powerful generator of athletic activities on an international scale. We have very good teams of baseball, basketball and volleyball, and many golf courses, hotel facilities, attractive tourist spots and good beach hotels, not to mention our shopping, which is a total magnet.

I think that our efforts are being focused in isolation, and our federations and the government fail to fully see the great economic impact. A clear example was the world surfing championship, the second that has been held in our country, which left significant income in the country's interior. Have we not noticed that Panama is a hot topic, since we are talked about as a tourist destination? If there is interest in visiting us, why not take advantage of this situation and make the most of it.

It is time that all of the sports federations, alongside the government, not only plan international competitions in various sports, but also establish short, medium and long term goals to make sports tourism become a reality.

The Hondurans enjoyed our country to the max in a short amount of time, yet it could have gone better. It was not easy to manage those tourists in the stadium, and even more difficult without facilities to provide an adequate parking area for buses. The federation sold parking spaces to vehicles, but not for buses, which require more space to maneuver within the area.

In every sporting event I have gained experience, and having attended all of them gives me the tools to speak with authority. It may seem difficult to come to an agreement, but when there are clear goals anything is possible, especially if it has to do with benefits for our athletes, business and tourism. Above all, we have to think about our country, and what would be the best way to build up our homeland.
