The esquipulistas go door to door across the country preaching the scriptures. The households in turn give them an offering, which they then take to the church of Antón.
Apolinar Ojo, organizer of the religious event, said that this celebration has been held for more than 38 years, and its continuity is based on the believers' faith in and devotion to the saint. Many families make a commitment to walk for a month and go from house to house.
Juan Evangelio Martínez, an esquipulista, assures that there is no better way to repay the favor that Christ made than by having faith and preaching the message, so that is why he has been doing this since he was a child, managing to convince other people to do so as well. María González, a devout believer, affirms that many people have great faith in this holy Christ. Every year they wait in the chapel for the thousands of people who will give a testimony of faith of the miracles performed by the Christ of Esquipulas, and always give their support to the esquipulistas.
The faithful travel from the capital to observe this act, which is part of the religious activities revolving around the Christ. Today at 8:00 p.m. the esquipulistas will head the procession.
