6th International Congress of the Spanish Language

An important delegation, headed by the current Director of the Cervantes Institute, the eminent philologist, Víctor García de la Concha and the Director of the Royal Spanish Academy, José Manuel Blecua, will visit Panama from February 24 to 27 to finalize the preparations and issue an international announcement of the Sixth International Congress of the Spanish Language that will take place in Panama from October 20 to 23, 2013.

The main event of the visit will take place on Tuesday, February 26, at 11:00 a.m., with the signing of the agreement between the Cervantes Institute and the Ministry of Education to formalize the VI International Congress of the Spanish Language, which will be attended by leading international figures in the world of culture and cultural and audiovisual industries, and will be inaugurated by the King and Queen of Spain and the President of the Republic, Ricardo Martinelli.

On Monday, February 25, at 3:00 p.m., the delegation will meet with the First Lady of the Republic, Marta Linares de Martinelli, and members of the National Commission for the Commemoration of the V Centenary of the Discovery of the Pacific Ocean. The Ambassador of Spain, Jesús Silva, and his wife will offer a reception to the illustrious visitors on Monday, February 25, starting at 7:00 in the evening.

The aim of this Congress, the most important international event for the Spanish language that is held every four years, is to analyze the situation and challenges of Spanish as a second global language for international communication.

Past Congresses of the Spanish Language have been held in Zacatecas (Mexico) in 1997, Valladolid (Spain) in 2001, Rosario (Argentina) in 2004, Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in 2007 and Valparaiso (Chile) in 2010.
