"Summoning Worlds"

In commemoration of the Fifth Centennial of the Discovery of the South Sea, the first Biennial of the South in Panama 2013 "Summoning Worlds"
has begun, an international project that aims to incorporate the cultural agenda in this country in order to stimulate cultural development and promote new trends in the visual arts.
This first Biennial seeks to bring together the vision of diverse perspectives, that of artists and their productions, institutions and different audiences.
It provides a vitally important field of action to recognize, promote and encourage artistic creativity and promote new trends in visual arts in the cultural and urban environment of this Central American region, transforming to a certain degree the landscape of the city and its scenes and, in effect, involving the observer in a constant dialogue and interaction with these structural practices.
These interventions will convoke processes of a playful and interactive nature, work projects and community participation, proposals to access technology and existing forms of communication in a temporary habitat of artistic experiences.
Making the most of the geological suitability of the host country, the event will highlight the nation's culture and art, reclaim the right of voices in academic circles to take initiative and stimulate the educational vision of local residents.
Aware of the call to unite cultural heritage and tradition, the Mayor of Panama City, together with the Arts and Cultural Development Advisor of this city Luz Botero, accept the challenge to create and put into service a platform that will be comprised of an Organizing Committee, Support Committees and a Curatorial Committee with international members.
Those artists selected to participate in this exhibition will reflect on the relationship among topics of Violence, Economy, Water and Travel, which were chosen and will each be evaluated by an extremely qualified jury.
A formal invitation has been extended from the host nation to the embassies and their representatives and officials in each country, as well as to companies in the private sector and international organizations, encouraging them to be involved and thus drive a higher level of promotion for the artists.
Five hundred years ago, Vasco Núñez de Balboa spied the South Sea and made a discovery for humanity. Likewise, today we envision places that, with this intervention, will contribute new insights to the world and new spaces to hold encounters for constructive creativity and culture.
