Panama issues Insurance for the Tourist

Panamá´s Tourism Authority, The ATP, recently started its campaign involving an Insurance for the Tourist. This is an insurance policy that will cover foreign visitors or Panamanians overseas who arrive through Tocumen International Airport and stay legally in the country.

After fulfilling all the legal matters, the insurance giant Assicurazioni Generali, S.p.A. won the licitation for this insurance by offering the best value. This company will serve as the insuring party thanks to a contract signed with the ATP.

The contract with the insuring company is for 3 years and was signed for the amount of 12 million dollars. The benefits of this policy will cover the tourists for injuries produced by accident or disease (non-preexisting) during the first 30 days of their stay in our country. With respect to accidental death, derived hospitalization and medical expenses as a result of injuries caused by accident that affects the tourist will be covered. In case of needed medical transfer (including rent of terrestrial or aerial ambulance, if it is requires) will be covered. Also, all expenses of hotel for a maximum of 10 days and nonhospitable pharmaceutical expenses as a result of accident or disease will also be covered. In case of death, the repatriation of the body to the country of origin will be covered as well as legal and administrative attendance by accidental loss of documents. Expenses of odontology and other services like translation in English, Portuguese and French are also part of the contract.

The contract stipulates that the insuring company will have to execute at least two annual surveys to know the satisfaction the clients and tourists, and to present/display monthly information on the claims presented with their respective causes.

For Salo Shamah, General Administrator of the ATP, this Insurance for the Tourist is an excellent incentive for travelers who choose Panama as their destination since there are only a small number of countries which offer this.
