Reception of Santa María La Antigua

In a long caravan, hundreds of Aguadulce residents greeted the image of "The Pilgrim Virgin" Santa María La Antigua this weekend.

The statue has toured most of the country in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the founding of Santa María La Antigua del Darién, the first diocese on the mainland.

The image, which was stored in the St. John the Evangelist Parish in Canto de El Llano de Santiago de Veraguas, was turned over to Uriah Ashley, Bishop of the Diocese of Coclé, at a ceremony on Saturday morning.

The statuette was carried by caravan from the area of Divisa to the hostel Hogar Bethania in the town of Aguadulce, where a large crowd was waiting for it to arrive and then joined in the procession to the church of San Juan Bautista.

The image will be taken on a circuit to the parishes of Coclé until September 7th, when it will be taken to Panama City for its patron saint festival on the 9th.
