The “El Nispero” Zoo is located in the outskirts of Cerro Gaital and is approximately 7 acres in size and is fenced by huge topical pine trees. The freshness of its wheather is evident at 1968 feet above sea level.
Depending on the tour specifics, your visit will take at least 45 minutes, but your curiosity and admiring of the species and landscape features will most likely extend your tour duration. The zoo is home to around 90 animal species, in addition to an approximate of 180 different trees and plants which are native to this area.
Among the animal speciesyou may encounter, you will be able to observe exotic birds from Asia and Africa, such as the golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) and the Royal Palms (white turkey); as well as some tropical species like parrots, macaws and toucans. Monkeys, ocelots, tapirs and an oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus)are just the beginning of a large collection of animals that will amaze adults and children.
The zoo has several trails that run around the entire site, embellished by beautiful decorative plants. You can also enjoy the botanical garden or you can just relax, take a time to read, meditate or enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.
“El Nispero” is home to the new Centro de Conservacion de Anfibios de El Valle (Center for the Preservation of Amphibians of El Valle), a center for the study of amphibians, sponsored by the Houston, San Antonio and San Diego zoo parks. The center performs research of the bacteria responsible for the eradication of the golden frog (Atelopus zeteki), among other anphibians, and will work to ensure their survival. It has aquariums, exhibits and a reading and video center in both languages, English and Spanish.
For guided tours or large groups, the zoo offers a tour guide, who will provide details regarding the features as well as information on the species that reside in this place.
