Catholics in Panama now enter the period of Lent, which is known for 40 days of fasting, prayers and penance, in reflection of what happened during the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.

Fasting and abstinence during Lent

- Fasting means to eat only one main meal each day.

- Abstinence means not eating any meat.

- Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of abstinence and fasting.

- Abstinence is required of believers older than 14, and fasting for those from 18 to 59 years old.

These rituals begin with Palm Sunday and end on Easter Sunday, but for some they start a week before, on the Friday of Sorrows.

Holy Week is preceded by Lent, which ends on the Week of Passion, when the Eucharist is celebrated on Holy Thursday, the crucifixion of Jesus is commemorated on Good Friday and his Resurrection during the Easter Vigil on Easter Eve on Saturday until Easter Sunday.

Numerous shows of popular religion take place around the world during Holy Week.

The holiday is referred to in English by a variety of different names, including Easter, Easter Sunday, Resurrection Day and Resurrection Sunday. In 2013, Palm Sunday is held on March 24, Holy Thursday falls on March 28, Good Friday is on March 29 and Easter Sunday is March 31st.
