Sugarcane Festival in Pesé a sweet success

On Sunday March 17,  a grand parade drew to a close the 67th National Sugarcane Festival in Pesé, in the province of Herrera.

The festival, which began last Thursday, March 14, was heavily attended by both townspeople and tourists, with the biggest crowds arriving on the weekend.

In the parade there were 12 carts, one bearing her royal majesty Viviana Atencio, 2013 Festival Queen and Melany Varela, 2012 District Queen, whose attire was the traditional national costume, the pollera dress, and who rode a cart fashioned out of sugarcane byproducts.

It was not without its customary Carnavalesque singing, dancing, drumming and joy of the festival-goers, who also enjoyed good performances by other delegations.

The parade was headed by the Miss Panama contestant Yuli Sánchez from Herrera province.
